Murano Glass

Murano Glass originates from the island of Murano which is located off the coast of Venice in Italy. Murano Glass is famous for it's vibrant colours and elaborate designs. The glass has been made in Murano since 1291 when most venetian glass makers moved to the island. Murano was already a well known commercial port dating back to the 7th century before the glassmakers of venice moved there, and is still attracting millions of visitors today.

During the 1950's and 1960's Murano glass was at it's height of popularity and was exported all over the world. Tourists to Venice and Murano also bought the glass in great quantities to take home, with Popular Murano glass gifts being Murano beads and Murano Jewellery.

Murano glass and jewellery is renowned for it's bright and beautiful colours and intricate designs. The colours and designs are achieved using various techniques handed down from the venetian glassmakers of old. Some techniques involve adding compounds to the molten glass to achieve a particular colour whereas other pieces will involve combining layers of glass.
